Johnson Brothers Friendly Village, an iconic collection of scenes of village and country life, has been in production since 1953. New pieces are always being introduced to this very popular pattern, and hundreds of different pieces have been made over the years. Many pieces are highly sought after collector’s items.

Patterns
Plates are trimmed with a brown (almost black) floral and ivy swirled border. Scenes range from the Village Square, the Hayfield, the Mill, to other idyllic snapshots of country life.
Pieces are produced using the classic “transfer ware” method, where original hand engravings are used to create a printed scene on a tissue thin paper which is then glazed over. This method protects the image, in what is termed ‘under glaze’ in the fine “transfer ware” industry. |

Friendly Village Spin-Off Patterns
Friendly Village also produced many spin-off patterns. Many people mistakenly believe patterns such as “Merry Christmas” and “Christmas” are part of Friendly Village, but they are actually patterns in their own right. While they are their own patterns, they were created to complement Friendly Village and can easily be interchanged and mixed together.
Friendly Village is a great family heirloom that can be passed from generation to generation.
The availability of replacement pieces as well as the continued introduction of new pieces, lends itself very well to being an heirloom for future generations that can easily be maintained and expanded.
Childhood memories of Holiday meals create a family bond across generations. Each generation can add new pieces and pass on the memories and stories of great family times.
Friendly Village is also a great starter set to begin your own family’s traditions, a set that can be slowly added onto for every special occasion. |
